Diane Welcomes Improvements to Rape Crisis Provisions
London MP Diane Abbott welcomed the news today that 19 Rape Crisis Centres across the country will get special emergency funding from the government so that they can continue their important work supporting victims of rape and sexual violence. More than £705,000 will be paid out to them in the coming weeks to ensure the Centres can weather the financial crisis.
The emergency funding is in addition to £3 million the government has pledged to help rape and sexual assault support services. The Home Office are currently looking into a way that these services can be made sustainable in the long-term.
Responding to the news, Diane Abbott said:
“It is great news that these vital services are being given support at this crucial time. 2008 is the first year that no rape crisis centre has been forced to close – this is a precedent we must continue. I am looking forward to seeing a solution to the funding problems that is long-term and sustainable. It is essential we have a stable, wide-reaching and independent rape and sexual violence support service.”
