People Power as World’s First Climate Law is Made

29 Oct 2008

Climate change campaigner and London MP Diane Abbott was celebrating today after the Climate Change Bill successfully left the House of Commons.

The ambitious Bill was voted through the House of Commons by a sweeping majority on Tuesday and will now enter its final stage in the House of Lords before becoming law. It will be the first law of its kind worldwide.

Last minute changes to the Bill by Ministers mean that reduction of C02 will be 80% by 2050 instead of 60% as originally planned. Aviation and shipping emissions will also be included in the targets.

Hackney North and Stoke Newington MP Diane praised the work of Friends of the Earth and other environment groups for their role in pushing the Bill through:

“I have had more letters, emails and telephone calls about the Climate Change Bill in the past two years than any other single issue. There are a number of passionate environmental groups in my constituency who have worked incredibly hard to mobilise support for the Climate Change Bill, and to ensure that the law will be tough enough to deal with the challenges that face us. I congratulate these groups on their work and I congratulate the Government on listening. I now have faith that MPs, Ministers and campaign groups can work together to make the changes we need to stick to our ambitious targets.”
