Diane Abbott attacks government 'refreshambles'

14 Nov 2012
Shock new figures have revealed that the Tory government has so far secretly blown well over £3million on ‘teas, coffees, fruit juices and biscuits’ for Tory Ministers and civil service Mandarins. There are fears that the total bill the government has run up could be over double that.

The government was forced reveal some details of the wasteful spending following PQs by Labour’s Shadow Public Health Minister, Diane Abbott MP.

One of the most shocking figures is spending by the Department of Health who have blown nearly a staggering £1.5 million on tea and biscuits since the Tories took over.  However, the overall figure may be far greater as 10 Downing Street, Nick Clegg’s Office, the Home Office and the Department for Education are keeping their biscuit bill a secret from taxpayers, and the Ministry of Defence, the Department of Communities and Local Government, the Department for Transport, Ministry of Justice are yet to come clean about how much they have spent.

Labour’s Diane Abbott MP, who forced the government to reveal these figures, said:

‘This must stop. This Tory spending for Tory Ministers and officials is upsetting, arrogant and eye-wateringly wasteful. However, I fear it’s just the tip of the iceberg. What’s being uncovered here is luxury refreshments for those at the top, and cuts and P45s for everyone else. Hardworking taxpayers will despair because this same government has axed over 6,000 of our nurses and 6,800 of our
frontline police officers. It’s clear we’re not ‘all in this together’.’
