More need to be done to stop rise in numbers sectioned

Diane Abbott calls for radical action as new figures show more mentally ill people being sectionedDiane Abbott MP, Labour’s shadow public health minister says Britain must undergo a ‘revolution’ in attitudes to mental health and wellbeing.
She said:
"This is really sad, and it paints a bleak picture. It seems as if we’re heading backwards – in terms of the figures, the cuts that are happening and also in terms of attitudes – when what’s needed is a revolution in how we see mental health and wellbeing. Even basic mental health services are being
pushed to the edge. In government, Labour huge improvements to mental health services, and help changed attitudes. But we’re absolutely clear about how far we still have to go.’
‘Cuts in support to parents like Sure Start, cuts to Children & Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and cuts to early intervention are putting vulnerable people at increased risk of mental health problems and adding to pressure on the system. These figures tell the story of the pressure being put on vital services, such as crisis care, psychological therapies and supported housing.
‘These figures come at a time when the NHS is expected to deliver significant savings while undergoing a significant and risky reorganisation. GPs will be expected to commission mental health care, but we know that many of them lack the skills and experience to do this. The Tory-led Government must clearly set out how it will ensure that mental healthcare does not suffer as the NHS faces
unprecedented challenges."
