Diane Abbott urges rethink over flu hygiene

05 Oct 2012
Diane Abbott MP, Labour’s Shadow Public Health Minister, urges better flu hygiene following a new international health survey.  It shows that of the five populations studied, people from the UK were the least likely to pay more attention to basic rules of hygiene. She said:

‘This has to improve. The government’s decision to axe the flu awareness campaign means that, yet again, it is British families and some of the most vulnerable in society, who will pay the cost. We’ve got to get people to pay more attention to basic rules of hygiene such as washing hands and
sneezing into tissues. We do need public awareness campaigns that are focussed
on what people can do to protect themselves and their families.

‘The danger is that this government’s NHS disaster creates a perfect storm for
families and the elderly this winter. Waiting times are spiralling upwards, awareness-raising has been ditched, and we’re seeing huge cuts to social care.’
