We can't take risks with the fight against crime
As statistics show that theft and robbery have increased in the last year, Hackney MP Diane Abbott has condemned the Tory-led Government for being out of touch with the needs of people in areas like Hackney.
The latest crime figures from the British Crime Survey show that personal acquisitive crime - which includes robbery and theft from the person – has risen by a shocking 13 per cent in England and Wales.
Theft from the person has gone up by an alarming 10 per cent – the largest year-on-year increase in almost 10 years whilst the number of robberies rose by 3 per cent. And in London there has been a shocking 13% rise in robbery and 6% rise in burglary.
Diane Abbott, MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington, said: “David Cameron is taking huge risks with the fight against crime. At a time when robbery and personal theft is on the rise, the Tory-led Government is cutting over 16,000 police officers, including 1907 in London alone.
"Despite their promises to protect frontline services we know that thousands of officers have already been taken out of 999 response teams, neighbourhood teams and traffic units. I have real concerns about what’s happening with policing at the moment.
“The Government is out of touch with people's concerns and taking risks with crime and people's personal safety – David Cameron and his Home Secretary Theresa May urgently need to set out a clear and proper plan to cut crime, instead of police officers, and explain how they intend to build better relationships between the police forces and local communities.”
