Record drop in under-18 conception rate under Labour
28 Feb 2012
Figures for England and Wales show that the 2010 under-18 conception rate (35.5 conceptions per 1,000) is the lowest estimated rate since 1969. The 7.3% decline in the under-18 conception rate 2009 to 2010 represents the greatest single year decrease in the under-18 conception rate since 1975/76. Ms Abbott said:
‘These figures show that the lowest under-18 conception rate since 1969. This drop took place under a Labour government. This shows the success of Labour’s strategy of working to improve sex education. We all want to see fewer teenage pregnancies, but you’ll do it by improving sex education, not ludicrous schemes around abstinence, as these figures show.
‘The danger is that this government’s NHS policies will cause the fragmentation of sexual health services and the progress that has been made will start to go backwards.’
