Diane Abbott, Labour’s Shadow Public Health Minister, comments on the contraceptive implants story in Southampton
10 Feb 2012
Diane Abbott MP has said that 'sex and relationship education' is key to improving British sexual health, in response to the contraceptive implants story in Southampton:‘It is wrong to imply that healthcare professionals are handing out contraceptive implants like sweets. There are very careful guidelines in place. Health professionals always stress that young people should talk to their parents. But if young people refuse to talk to parents and are going to be engaged in risky sexual behaviour, it is important that they get the best possible health advice, and that may include contraception.
‘It is because the last labour government worked hard on making sure that young people had the best advice on sexual health that the rate of teenage pregnancy sis coming down.’
‘Evidence shows that high quality sex and relationships education, provided by parents and at school, combined with access to free, confidential sexual health services helps delay the age young people first have sex and increases the likelihood they will use contraception when they do.’
