Diane Abbott demands that David Cameron fulfils promise to provide 3000 new
10 Nov 2011
Diane Abbott, Labour’s Shadow Public Health Minister, comments on the news that fewer women are choosing home births: ‘This government has sidelined maternity services even though the needs of pregnant women are greater than ever before.
‘Before the election David Cameron, Andrew Lansley and Nick Clegg promised 3000 more midwives. Now their silence on this issue is deafening.
‘David Cameron and Andrew Lansley should have the guts to explain their plans to rip into frontline health services through axing thousands of clinical posts, such as nurses and midwives.
‘The Government have also been silent on its commitment to Maternity Matters, the flagship policy on maternity services launched by the previous Government in April 2007.’
