England's sickest babies at risk from unacceptable nursing cuts
14 Oct 2011
Diane Abbott MP, the Shadow Health Minister, comments on the new study showing that England’s sickest babies at risk by unacceptable nursing cuts: ‘Frontline nursing staff who are doing crucial work for mothers and children in neonatal units need to be protected and supported as a matter of absolute priority.
‘It is shocking. The government shouldn’t be putting some of the country’s most vulnerable children at risk, and leaving British mothers to struggle alone and in silence. The government needs to start putting the NHS first.
‘There are a number of factors taking patient care backwards for mothers and children across the country. David Cameron's failure to honour a promise to introduce an extra 3,000 midwives in England is putting the safety of mothers and unborn babies at risk, many women are experiencing unnecessary heartbreak as they miscarry due to poor NHS services, and cuts to frontline nursing staff are putting the lives of England’s sickest babies at risk. The health of mothers and children should not be so far down the government’s priority list.’
