Diane demands enquiry as Coalition turns to McDonalds and KFC for advice on obesity
Diane has demanded an enquiry into the Coalition’s decision to put fast food companies McDonald’s, KFC, PepsiCo and Mars at the heart of writing government policy on obesity and diet-related diseases.
The Coalition
has asked several key
food and alcohol industry members, including the owners of Walker’s crisps, McDonalds and KFC, to suggest measures to tackle public health crises, predominately including diseases caused by the consumption of fast food and alcohol,
ahead of the
expected White Paper on Public Health to be released next month.
Diane has asked the Health Select Committee to launch an enquiry into the Department of Health's decision to allow companies direct control over the UK's public health policy
Diane said:
“This is the worst idea the Coalition have come up with yet.
They are clearly so desperate for guidance that they have turned to the very last people you would expect to get ideas.
It is naïve to think that those who make their livelihoods by selling fast food and alcohol will be able to advise the Coalition impartially, and that they will put their business interests entirely behind them to tell the government what they should do to make people healthier.
I can’t wait to see what the Coalition comes up with in the Public Health White Paper, as it seems they are looking to takeaway a quick fix, rather than a long term solution to the problems.”
