Diane congratulates Hackney School on leading the way on LGBT teaching

05 Nov 2010

Diane has congratulated Stoke Newington School and Sixth Form on becoming a training centre for LBGT teaching.

The school in Clissold Road will give advice and training to primary and secondary school teachers from around the country in how to tackle homophobic bullying, after it was recognised for holding an outstanding LGBT Awareness Month earlier this year.

Diane, who features in a video for gay rights group Stonewall’s new campaign ‘ It Gets Better’ released this week, is proud that the school has become an example of good practice for other schools up and down the country.

Diane said:

“Understanding something is the first step in accepting and I congratulate teachers and pupils at Stoke Newington School for their bravery in tackling homophobic bullying head on by talking to students, rather than ignoring or skirting around the issue.

I am extremely proud to see a Hackney school leading the way and it is great news that they will become an example for schools up and down the country.

It just shows what fantastic students and teachers we have working here in Hackney.”
