Diane calls for urgent discussions to root out violent gangs in Hackney
15 Jul 2010
Diane Abbott MP has written to the Minister for Policing and Criminal Justice Nick Herbert MP, requesting a meeting to help continue her work against Turkish-Kurdish gangs in North London.
Various loan-shark, heroin and racketeering gangs have become prevalent in and around Hackney, and since the jailing of billionaire kingpin Abdullah Baybasin in 2006 they have become extremely volatile and increasingly violent. As a result the local Turkish-Kurdish community are particularly fearful, with most people afraid of reporting crimes to the police for fear of recrimination, therefore making it harder for the police to apprehend gang members.
Diane said:
“This is an issue I will not let rest. These gangs intimidate ordinary, law-abiding members of the community and wreak havoc on the streets of North London. In the previous year alone; three fatal shootings, twenty high-profile shootings and twelve other major incidents were attributed directly to these gangs”
“I have requested a meeting with the Minister for Policing to see what can be done to build on the successes already achieved in bringing these gangs to justice. Inroads have been made, however with the help of the local community, the police and my colleagues in Parliament, we can surely make a final push to help reclaim our streets”.
