Diane urges caution on graduate tax
Diane has questioned the Lib Con’s proposed graduate tax as simply an attempt to re-brand tuition fees.
Diane, who voted against tuition fees, says more research is needed into the proposal, fears the principles behind the Lib Con’s announcement are unclear, and that this is simply a rebranding exercise.
She says the main challenge facing higher education is how to fund universities properly while not increasing the financial burden on students.
Diane said:
“I am pleased that the Lib Cons have come round to my view that tuition fees are an unacceptable burden on students.
But they need to look at all the options. The Graduate Tax is certainly worth considering seriously, but there are certain problems with it. The current proposals just look like a re-branding exercise by Vince Cable, an attempt to placate those Liberal Democrats who campaigned against fees.
What has the Browne Review being doing up to this point if it hasn’t been looking at Graduate Tax?
This is just another attempt to hide increases in the cost of higher education for students and their families. People will not fall for this.”
