Diane calls for 'people power' to make sure the Hackney Empire opens again

23 Feb 2010

Diane has urged that all involved in the Hackney Empire ‘do everything in their power’ to ensure it re-opens.

The former music hall shut earlier this month for ‘a period of reflection’ thought to be due to financial reasons.

Diane has tabled an Early Day Motion (EDM) in Parliament to highlight to her concern that the theatre must reopen because of the work it does with schools and youth projects in the borough.

She plans to attend the public meeting about the theatre’s future, which has been rescheduled for March 11th.

Diane said: “The Empire has always been an important part of Hackney and has done some excellent work with schools and young people in the borough. I am concerned that the theatre does re-open in nine months time as planned, and urge that we do all we can to make sure this happens. Hackney will be far less rich in terms of history, culture and community without the Empire.”
