Diane Welcomes Extra Cash for Elderly

22 Jul 2008

Hackney North and Stoke Newington MP Diane Abbott welcomed the news today that Hackney will receive £3.4 million in Government funds towards care homes for the elderly.

The £80 million Department of Health plan will see 25 sites awarded a share of the cash. Hackney's Mount Pleasant Court is set to receive £3.4 million. The money will be used for "extra care housing" – allowing more elderly people the chance to have a home of their own with the level of care they need.

Speaking after the news was announced yesterday, Diane said:

"This extra money is fantastic news for Hackney. Extra care housing provides a much-needed opportunity for elderly people and those suffering from dementia to live an independent life. Elderly people deserve to have the care they need but to continue living in their own space for as long as possible. I am pleased that the Department of Health has recognised this and is clearly striving towards empowerment for elderly people. Hackney provides some first-rate care for the elderly. The £3.4 million will help this work continue."
