Diane calls for joint action by the authorities on rising Gang Violence in the Turkish/Kurdish community

20 Jan 2010

Diane Abbott MP today expressed further concern over three recent murders of members of the Turkish Kurdish community across North East London, and urges that joint action be taken by the authorities.

The murders, along with 11 other major shootings in the area since August, have increased overall gun crime in London by 17%, exposing the entire community to bad publicity.

Commenting today Diane said:

“The Turkish/Kurdish community is one of the fastest growing in Hackney and it plays a very important and positive role. However the entire Hackney community is concerned by the gang violence that has erupted in the Turkish/Kurdish community in recent months. I have consulted with the community about these issues. Most Turkish/Kurdish coffee houses and football clubs are purely social venues and as such play a valuable role. However a minority of these establishments seem to be implicated in illegal activities. We urgently need a high profile, systematic programme of joint action between the police, the Council and local stakeholders to close down those cafes that have been infiltrated by criminals. Until such action is taken we will not make progress in tackling this issue and will not get people’s confidence back. I will be working closely with local stakeholders and the community on taking these proposals forward in the coming weeks and months”.
