Protection for Hackney Slave Trade Monument
Diane Abbott MP has today announced her support for the decision to award the tombstone of the famous abolitionist Olaudah Equiano's daughter Joanna Vassa in Stoke Newington's Abney Cemetery a Grade II listing.
The monument commemorates Joanna Vassa and stands on Dr Watt's Walk in the Abney Park Cemetery. It was discovered in 2005 and restored with help from the Abney Park Trust.
Joanna Vassa was the only surviving daughter of perhaps the most well know black slavery abolitionist in England. Olaudah Equiano successfully drew attention to the horrors of the slave trade through his autobiography, published in 1789, and fuelled the anti-slavery movement in the UK.
On hearing the news that the monument will become Grade II listed, Diane said:
"I am very pleased to hear that the historical value of this monument has been recognised. I would certainly encourage local people and visitors to the area to have a look around the Cemetery which holds Joanna Vassa's and many other fascinating tombstones."
