Tougher Sentences for Knife Killers

11 Nov 2009

Hackney North and Stoke Newington MP Diane Abbott today welcomed the Justice Secretary Jack Straw’s decision to up the minimum sentence for people who fatally stab others by ten years.

Speaking after the news was announced Diane said:

“It is quite right that knife killers should get tough sentences, in line with those given to killers who use guns. These are all appalling offences and should be dealt with as such. It needs to be very clear that carrying a knife puts you at risk of a hefty jail sentence. If a fight breaks out and you’re the one with the knife, expect a life sentence.”
