London MP Alarm Over Threats to Human Trafficking Unit

07 Oct 2009

Hackney North and Stoke Newington MP Diane Abbott today reacted with alarm over renewed threats to the Metropolitan Police’s specialist unit on human trafficking.

Commenting today Diane said:

“On the one hand the Government tells us that we need strict immigration laws because of the hoards of human traffickers smuggling people into the country. But at the same time the Met are suggesting they do not have the funding to continue their specialist human trafficking unit. Charities that are trying to help victims of trafficking see hundreds of men, women and children who are being exploited in anything from prostitution to fruit-picking. It should not be left up to charities and the under-resourced Poppy Project to battle this problem.

We need police who are trained to look into human trafficking networks and we need more resources given to protecting victims.”
