Healthcare Insurers’ Discrimination against Jewish Community

15 Jun 2009

Diane Abbott has joined a campaign against discrimination in the healthcare insurance industry. The Hackney North and Stoke Newington MP was concerned to hear that members of the Chardedi Jewish community living in Stamford Hill have had their health policies terminated and claims unpaid without full explanation.

Insurance company HSA is used widely by the Jewish community in Stamford Hill but the company has put many policies on hold indefinitely whilst they “investigate” claims. Other companies are following suit and not giving out policies to people living in postcodes in the area.

Commenting today Diane said:

“I am deeply concerned by what is going on here. It is completely wrong for HSA to terminate policies or not pay out claims without good reason. My constituents should be kept very well informed of what is going on, but it seems many of them have had little communication from HSA at all. I have written to both HSA and WPA, who have refused a constituent of mine a claim on the same basis, as well as the Financial Services Authority to demand answers.”
