Time for the UK to Begin a “New Era of Trust”?

04 Jun 2009

Diane Abbott MP today called on the UK to follow President Obama’s lead and work to restore relations with the Muslim population.

President Obama was in Cairo today to deliver a key-note speech on America’s relationship with the Muslim world. He emphasised the need to build trust between the United States and Muslims globally and to “re-energise the dialogue with the Muslim world.”

Commenting on the speech Diane said:

“President Obama has set out to rebuild his relationship with Muslims in America and globally. He recognised the need to fight extremism and terrorism without losing respect. I agree wholeheartedly with his sentiment and hope that we might see the beginnings of change in the way the UK Government treats its Muslim residents. For a start I would suggest looking at the crushing counter-terrorism laws that destroy the civil liberties of innocent people on the basis that they come from the Muslim community. In particular I am campaigning for an end to the use of secret evidence which means that foreign nationals and British citizens alike can be detained without ever hearing the case against them. Fight terrorism but respect each individual’s rights.”
