Support for Black Lawyers
London MP Diane Abbott showed her support for ethnic minority lawyers on Saturday speaking at a conference organised by the Law Society and the Bar Council. Abbott was on the opening plenary with the Lord Chief Justice Lord Justice Judge, the Attorney General for England and Wales Patricia Scotland, the Chairman of the Bar Council Desmond Browne QC and the President of the Law Society Paul Marsh.
She has a history of calling for improved diversity in the legal profession and has an on-going campaign to support ethnic minority lawyers affected by cuts to legal aid.
Speaking after the conference Abbott said:
“Almost two years ago I began highlighting the negative consequences of legal aid cuts for ethnic minority lawyers. The legal aid cuts disproportionately affect small firms and ethnic minority-led firms tend to be small. I think it is grossly unfair that ethnic minority lawyers, many of whom were forced to set up on their own because of the glass ceiling they hit at other firms, are being hit by changes to legal aid. It is vital that we have a diverse legal industry to serve the diverse country we live in. The Minority Lawyers’ Conference was a great chance for lawyers to receive information and support they need to ensure they can progress in their careers. I was glad to be a part of it.”
