Concern over G20 Policing Grows

20 Apr 2009

Hackney North and Stoke Newington MP Diane Abbott today expressed concern at the result of the second post-mortem on Ian Tomlinson which found that he had died of abdominal haemorrhaging, not a heart attack as was previously reported.

Having called for the inquiry into the death of Ian Tomlinson during the protests to be conducted independently from the City of London police, Diane has shown her support for an overarching inquiry. Speaking today she said:

“Whilst I am pleased at the news last week that the Metropolitan Police will conduct a review of policing techniques during the G20 protests, I remain extremely concerned at reports that are emerging of police maltreatment of protesters. In particular the news that Ian Tomlinson did not die of a heart attack but abdominal haemorrhaging, and evidence that police officers were covering up their identification numbers. This looks to be a serious case of police misconduct and I believe calls for a truly independent review of what went on during the G20 protests, and more generally how police are briefed for protest policing.”
