Bursaries for Olympics Officials

15 Apr 2009

Hackney MP Diane Abbott today voiced her support for a scheme designed to turn Londoners into officiators at the 2012 Olympics.

The Official Sports London initiative has funding to help members of the public train to be technical officials for the variety of Olympics sports. A second level of bursaries will see people nominated by their governing sports body trained to Olympics officiator level.

Speaking today Diane said:

“I think this is a step in the right direction to giving Londoners the chance to participate in the Olympics. It’s important to remember that London 2012 isn’t just about the Games themselves, it’s about Londoners benefiting from the funding and attention to sports that the Olympics is bringing us. The Official Sports London scheme will give Londoners with a passion for sport the chance to gain experience and qualifications that reflect their interests. We need more grass-roots sports participation in London, and grass-roots sports need more officials, so it’s a win-win situation!”
