Support for G20 Death Inquiry
London MP Diane Abbott today supported the Independent Police Complaints Commission’s decision to run a full independent inquiry into the death of Ian Tomlinson during the G20 protests. Video footage shows Metropolitan Police standing by as a policeman in riot gear hit and pushed bystander Ian Tomlinson to the ground. Mr Tomlinson suffered a fatal heart attack moments after he was pushed.
Speaking today Diane Abbott said:
“I am shocked at what we have seen this week in footage of a member of the Metropolitan police force knocking an innocent man over. For days we have heard reports of police misconduct at the G20 protests. This video evidence seems to suggest that these reports are well-founded. I am pleased that there will be an independent inquiry into Mr Tomlinson’s death and the actions of police involved. When police have an involvement in civilian deaths it is of the utmost importance that we have all the facts and act accordingly and with a criminal case if necessary.”
