The Antidote to Gangs, Guns and Knives?
MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington Diane Abbott will host the second annual London Schools and the Black Child Achievement Awards on Friday in the wake of a summer of bad press for young Black people. The important Awards will take place at the House of Commons on Friday evening and are sponsored by UBS Bank, one of the world’s leading financial institutions and our media partner Turner Broadcasting, the company behind CNN, TCN and Cartoon Network.
London Schools and the Black Child is an initiative set up by Diane Abbott to overcome problems of under-achievement among the Black communities in London. The Achievement Awards recognise the young Black students who are contradicting negative stereotypes by achieving very high academic grades. Many of the students have overcome barriers such as racism, poverty and starting life in a new country.
Speaking about the event, Diane said:
“Like many parents and members of the community, I am sick of hearing about young Black people getting into trouble with the police, being excluded from school and falling into unemployment traps. What we want to see and hear about are the success stories; stories that show how well many young Black people are doing, how successful and powerful they will be. The LSBC Achievement Awards are about doing just that. They are about showing the world that young Black people are worth more than the headlines on gangs, guns and knives suggest they are.”
