Racist Big Brother Gets its Comeuppance
MP Diane Abbott today applauded the media watchdog Ofcom’s decision that Channel 4 breached their code of conduct during the broadcast of racist comments on Celebrity Big Brother.
Channel 4 have now been ordered to publicise the results of Ofcom’s investigation before they broadcast the next series of Big Brother. The ruling is the first official assertion of Channel 4’s wrong-doing.
Over 45, 000 people filed complaints during the Celebrity Big Brother earlier in the year which saw Indian actress Shilpa Shetty bullied by three other contestants. The incidents caused a national racism row.
Commenting on the ruling Diane said:
“Today’s ruling confirms what at least 45,000 people in this country, and many more in other countries across the world, already knew: Channel 4 and Endemol behaved irresponsibly when they permitted the broadcast of these racist incidents. It’s about time Channel 4 took responsibility for this and gave a public apology.”
