National Mentoring Consortium Awards
MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington Diane Abbott MP helped celebrate the achievements of young people who have taken part in mentoring schemes on Wednesday. The National Mentoring Consortium’s Annual Award Ceremony took place in Canary Wharf and saw many successful business-people, media icons and politicians giving out awards and speaking about the benefits of the mentoring scheme.
The Consortium offers three mentoring schemes aimed at encouraging young people to reach their full potential and giving them valuable work experience. The Annual Awards Ceremony gives awards for the highest achieving young people and recognises the work of their mentors.
Ms. Abbott has had a keen interest in raising educational achievement levels for over a decade. Speaking after the ceremony she said:
“The National Mentoring Consortium offers a fantastic opportunity for young people to really push themselves and gain the skills they need to fulfil their true potential. The Consortium allows young people, particularly from those groups who are traditionally excluded like ethnic minorities, to gain access to the labour market. I want to see more and more young people reaching out to their full potential. Schemes like the National Mentoring Consortium are a brilliant supplement to schools, colleges and universities. What we also need to do is to ensure that our schools, colleges and universities are doing enough to help and support students.”
