MP Grilled by Schoolgirls
Diane Abbott MP was interviewed on Tuesday by local schoolgirls at the Portico City Learning Centre in Clapton. The girls, who were all aged between 12 and 13 years old, were taking part in a project organised by the City Learning Centre and the BBC. Diane was asked questions on topics as diverse as Britishness, gangs in Hackney, and street crime whilst two of the girls recorded the interview using professional equipment.
Diane was impressed with the girls’ questioning and said:
“The girls really knew what they were doing; they were confident and asked some very interesting questions relating to the issues they encounter in their lives. I think it’s fantastic that these young people are engaging with politics and media and learning new skills along the way. I’m so pleased that the wonderful facilities here are enabling young people to get experience of how real journalism works – it’s a brilliant idea.”
The BBC News School Report project is giving 100 schools around the country the opportunity to make their own news reports and broadcast them via the Internet. The BBC have provided journalists to help schools make their reports and will report on their progress on the 22nd March.
