Living Wage for Cleaners
MP Diane Abbott has today condemned Conservative members of the fire authority finance committee’s attempt to deny contract cleaners the London Living Wage of £7.20 per hour.
The committee was unable to come to a decision on the wages of contract cleaners working in fire stations after three Conservative members voted against paying cleaners the London Living Wage, introduced to ensure low-skilled workers are able to live in the capital. Diane joins several other MPs who have backed MP Dawn Butler’s Early Day Motion opposing the attempt and calling on the Committee members to rethink before the next vote on the 21st June.
Diane said:
“The decision of these Conservative Committee members to vote against allowing cleaners this basic wage is outrageous. These are workers who are performing essential work every day, who already work on very low wages, and who are traditionally women and ethnic minorities. How dare these Committee members sit in their ivory towers and condemn these workers to a ludicrously low wage?”
