Campaign for Crossrail

27 Jul 2007

MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington Diane Abbott stepped up the campaign to introduce the Crossrail initiative yesterday in Parliament.

Although the idea for a train line running from the South West through to the North East of London was conceived over 20 years ago, the plans are yet to materialise. The line would run from Kent through east London to Heathrow in the West. Diane’s constituency, which currently has no underground station, would also be well-served by the second Crossrail line proposed to run from Epping to Chelsea, Clapham or even Wimbledon.

Yesterday in Parliament Diane questioned the new Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly about the Crossrail line and when it would be likely to come into construction. Kelly reassured that House that the Crossrail Bill is under consideration and in the meantime Ministers are working on to ensure the project is affordable and properly financed.

Commenting today, Diane said:

“The Crossrail line would be immensely useful to the residents of Hackney and Stoke Newington. Crossrail two would give a direct line into a variety of different places in London. It’s about time we were given an easy option for making it into central London. I’m not going to give up the fight for Crossrail and Crossrail two. I’ll continue to badger Ministers on the plans until we see a vast improvement to transport links in the east end.
