Diane Abbott Welcomes Jesse Jackson

17 Aug 2007

MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington Diane Abbott is set to welcome one of the world’s most famous civil rights activists, Rev Jesse Jackson, in the Houses of Parliament on Monday 20th August at 3pm.

The Reverend is in visiting the UK as part of his Equanomics UK tour. The Equanomics initiative aims to highlight the economic inequalities past and present that exist between White and Black and ethnic minority communities in the UK. The tour ties in with the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade in the UK and uses this commemoration as a starting point for focusing on the economic contributions made by Black and ethnic minority people in the UK.

Diane said:

“It is an honour to welcome such an influential and important character of the 20th Century. Rev Jackson has spent his lifetime fighting for equality and the recognition of contributions made by Black and ethnic minority communities. The Equanomics project brings together a number of key groups in the UK who are fighting for the same objectives. Keeping these issues in the limelight will force people to address issues of economic inequalities that are still rife within the UK.”
