Tackling the Roots of Knife Crime
MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington Diane Abbott yesterday called on the Home Office to take serious measures to address the root causes of violent crime. She highlighted the fact that tougher sentencing and new laws are not solutions on their own.
During parliamentary questions to the Home Office Diane argued:
“As well as ensuring that we have effective policing and the right sentence tariff, the Government need to do more to deal with family breakdown and educational under-achievement, which are partly at the root of the issue.”
Diane has spent years campaigning for better education for children in disadvantaged areas. She heads the hugely successful “London School and the Black Child” initiative which aims at raising educational achievement levels.
A recent government report found evidence that excluded children are more likely to become involved in crime and gangs.
