Tragedy in Turkey
Diane Abbott MP has today called for compensation for the family of a British child burnt to death in a Turkish resort.
Six-year-old Eden Galvani-Skeete was holidaying with her family in the Gemini Park Resort on 29 July 2006 when she burnt to death due to an accident at a “fireshow”. Premier Homes UK is a sister company of Premier Homes Turkey which runs the resort where the incident took place.
Diane Abbott said: “I find it shocking that a popular holiday destination such as Turkey still does not have tough enough Health and Safety regulations to prevent this kind of avoidable accident happening. I find it sad that it has taken the tragic death of a young, bright girl to put this matter on the agenda.
One of my own constituents was badly hurt at the “fireshow”, and I am deeply concerned that this type of entertainment is allowed to continue without adequate checks and controls by the Turkish authorities.
I am pressing the sister company of Premier Homes Turkey to pay out and compensate all those involved. It is important that the victims and their families get the money they deserve, although this cannot in any way compensate for their loss.
I am calling on the British Government to contact the Turkish authorities and apply pressure to ensure that company is brought to justice, and for regulations to be brought in to stop this tragedy ever happening again.
I am currently arranging to meet with MPs, organisations and other interested parties to work out how we can take this matter further, and get the justice and compensation the victims and their families are entitled to.
