Local MP: “Hackney is a fantastic place to live”

23 Oct 2006

Diane Abbott, MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington, said: “the survey in no way reflects what it is like to live here in Hackney, on each of the criteria Hackney scores well. Our local area is an entrepreneurial hot spot with small businesses springing up everywhere, our new academies are raising educational standards, we have access to one of the most well renowned hospitals in the country, and we are exceeding targets on crime reduction.”

She added: “Hackney is clearly already a great place to live and it is constantly improving. We have so much to look forward to. London Fields Lido is about to open and the tube will come to Hackney shortly linking us to the City and driving forward economic regeneration.  The Olympics too will bring massive investment to Hackney and help transform our local landscape. Anyone looking to invest in property will tell you that Hackney is the place to buy”.

Diane, who has lived in Hackney for nearly 20 years, went on: “Like most inner-city boroughs Hackney still has problems but we have so much to celebrate. We live in one of the most multi-cultural and diverse communities in the country with a great atmosphere and a vibrant and a bohemian feel. We have fantastic markets and an excellent nightlife.”

Diane concluded: “I don’t think people in Hackney will take much notice of this nonsense, if anything surveys like this will only strengthen our local community and bring us closer together.”
