TFL Investment

Transport for London (TfL) today announced the launch of a whopping £2.7 million package of on-train and station security enhancements for East London’s rail services.

Delivered in partnership with the Borough of Hackney, and as part of TfL’s five-year £10bn Investment Programme, the new set of improvements is aimed at providing reassurance to the 21 million passengers  travelling on the two routes leaving London Liverpool Street every year: to Shenfield via Stratford and to Chingford, Enfield Town and Cheshunt via Hackney Downs.

Diane Abbott, MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington, said: “I was very pleased with TfL’s announcement that more money is going to be invested in East London. Hackney is still the only inner London Borough without access to the tube. I have long campaigned for improved transport links in and out of Hackney and am pleased that our rail services are being improved.”

Diane added: “The Borough of Hackney has had a lot of say in this process and I am sure the benefit to Hackney residents will be real and tangible.” She added: “One of the major issues for passengers is that of safety on platforms and trains, especially at night. The new package includes more CCTV on trains as well better lighting and cameras on stations. This will increase security and improve rail services across London. I am sure this will encourage more commuters to choose trains over cars.”

Diane concluded: “Lack of public transport can paralyse an area by making it stagnant. Whilst we are still awaiting the arrival of the tube enhancing our rail services is crucial to the further development of East London. I welcome today’s announcement but will keep up the pressure on TfL to continue to improve public transport in the poorest and least accessible areas of East London.”
