Top Education Minister visits Stoke Newington School
Diane and Andrew Adonis met with Head Teacher Mark Emmerson and Assistant Head Garry Lyle to discuss the work of the School’s Media and Arts College. In particular they wanted to assess the work Stoke Newington School has been doing to raise educational standards of Afro-Caribbean pupils.
Diane Abbott and Lord Adonis toured the school and met teachers, pupils and classroom assistants to discuss their experience of the pilot stage of the Aiming High Afro-Caribbean Pupil’s Project.
Diane said: “As the only school in the Borough Stoke Newington School has participated in the piloting of the Afro-Caribbean Pupil’s Project under the Aiming High initiative. This project is unique in its focus on Afro-Caribbean children. I was therefore very keen to come here to see how successful the initiative has been.”
Diane added: “Stoke Newington Media and Arts College is now one of the best performing schools in the Borough but for a long time the academic results of black boys lagged behind the school as a whole. The gap, whilst still too wide, is now narrowing. The Education Minister was very impressed with the achievements here at Stoke Newington School and on Friday he launched the full-scale project under the wider name: Black Pupil’s Achievement Project.”
Diane concluded: “The idea behind the pilot project was to get parents and the local community involved in our children’s education. I am extremely pleased to see that the hard work of Mark and his team has put into raising achievement levels has paid off. I believe the whole school has benefited from this and am certain the wider roll-out of the project will help raise standards in another 20 local authorities.”
