Tories must end the hostile environment for good – Diane Abbott

11 Jul 2018
Diane Abbott MP, Labour’s Shadow Home Secretary, responding to the news that the Government has paused a range of ‘hostile environment’ policies, said:

“The Government has finally accepted that as long as the ‘hostile environment’ is in place the Windrush scandal could continue for years to come. But for those who have already lost so much this is too little too late.

“Many questions remain, such as how many people have been wrongfully deported, detained or bullied into ‘voluntary removals’ and refused re-entry. Months later the Government does not have clear answers.

“Although this appears to be a step in the right direction, until the Government come forward with a clear plan for compensation, and an interim hardship fund, all they have done is pause the elements of their policies that have proved the most embarrassing.

“The Tories must come clean on their handling of the Windrush scandal and not just pause but end the hostile environment for good.”
