Police Crackdown in Hackney

11 May 2005

Diane Abbott, Labour MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington, today welcomed this second phase of Operation Resolve which saw 1000 police officers, PSCOs and street wardens flood the streets of 5 London boroughs in order to reduce crime and ‘transfer the fear of crime from the victim to offenders’.

Diane Abbott said: “I applaud the scheme’s commitment to tailoring their policing activity and focusing on tackling specifically local problems, and simultaneously working together to deal with cross-border crime.”

Abbott added: “I am particularly impressed by the ’Chicago style’ briefing method which allows the local community to engage with and influence the policing process in their local neighbourhood. This also allows officers to build on knowledge gained from local residents and thereby to increase arrests and make neighbourhoods safer.”

Diane Abbott, who is also the Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group and Gun Crime, explained: “The results from the first phase in early April have been very encouraging; 196 arrests including drug-dealers, robbers and violent offenders. 35 of these arrests were in Hackney where special bins were provided offering potential criminals and opportunity to drop their weapons.”

Abbott concluded: “Whilst the latest crime figures show that the government has successfully reduced overall crime there is still lots to be done, particularly where serious violent and gun crime in London is concerned. I think that Operation Resolve deserves praise and I will look forward to seeing positive results.”
