Abbott Meets Muslim Leaders

11 Mar 2005

In advance of this evening’s dinner Ms Abbott said: “There are a number of current political issues that are of great concern to the Muslim community. I voted against the Iraq war and for legislation to ban the incitement of religious hatred and I oppose the current anti-terror legislation bill because I believe it will impact unfairly on the Muslim community in a way which is totally contrary to the legal traditions of this country.”

Ms Abbott added: “It cannot be right for anybody to be interned in their home indefinitely without trial. In some cases people will not even be allowed to know what they are accused of. This is obviously wrong and I believe could potentially cause so much upset in communities that the Bill itself can lead to a rise in disaffection and possibly even a rise in terrorist recruits.”
