Abbott and Benn Take Over Empire

15 Mar 2005

Diane Abbott said today: “Now that Paul Boateng is resigning I am the longest serving black MP. However, despite having been an MP in Hackney North for 18 years I do not take anything for granted. I have organised this rally to mobilise my supporters, enable the public to question me face to face and also to deliver the message as to why people should be voting for me in the forthcoming General Election.”

Ms Abbott added: “I believe that Labour has invested in my constituency and that I can point to solid achievement after 7 years of Labour government. Obviously the big point of difference between myself and the Prime Minister, Tony Blair, is the war in Iraq. I was against the war and persistently argued and voted against it in Parliament so if people were opposed to the war they should be casting their vote for me.”

Ms Abbott continued: “It is a big thrill to be appearing on stage with Tony Benn. He is the man I most admire amongst living British politicians. He is going around the country camping for MPs that voted against the war and it is a privilege to host him here in Hackney. I am also delighted that my friend the actor, writer and singer Kwame Kwei-Armah is going to be master of ceremonies.”

Diane Abbott has been the MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington for 17 years. In 1987 Ms Abbott made history by becoming the first black women ever elected to the British Parliament. She has since built a distinguished career as a parliamentarian, broadcaster and commentator.

Tony been is a distinguished former Cabinet minister and leader of left-wing opinion. He celebrates his 80th birthday this year.
