It has taken courage for these men to come forward and we must commend their bravery

Diane Abbott MP, Labour’s Shadow Home Secretary, speaking in response to The Football Association’s decision to investigate allegations of footballers being sexually abused as youth players, said: “It has taken courage for these men to come forward and we must commend their bravery. There is a concern that the abuse may have been widespread and that it may extend to other sports.
“It is also unwise to assume that all these problems are purely historical. The hotline established by the NSPCC has proved effective. It should be extended and promoted to cover current cases too and the Government should provide resources for that as they are needed.
“There are major questions about the way cases of child sexual abuse are handled generally and whether the Government’s separate inquiry into Child Sex Abuse is fit for purpose as the sheer volume of incidents rises.”
