The Annual Report and Accounts for the Department of Health represent a catalogue of Tory failure and the NHS is suffering as a result

21 Jul 2016

Speaking today following release of the Annual Report and Accounts for the Department of Health, Diane Abbott, Shadow Secretary of State for Health, said: “It is little wonder the Tories have sneaked out the Department of Health’s Annual Report and Accounts on the last day of the Parliamentary session to avoid scrutiny.
“These accounts represent a catalogue of Tory failure and the NHS is suffering as a result.
“The NHS is facing a financial crisis and performance is also deteriorating sharply with A&E waiting times getting much worse throughout the year.
“The Tories can’t be trusted with the NHS. Labour will always protect and defend it”.

Notes to Editors:

1. The Annual Report and Accounts show that the NHS providers ended the financial year with a net deficit of £2.45 billion (p.19).
2. A&E waiting times have deteriorated sharply throughout the year (Figure 3, p.20)
3. NHS Trusts and NHS Foundation Trusts both saw Net Total spending rise by 1.1% in 2015/16 compared to 2014/15. This is lower than the combined rise in inflation and the rise in the population. The spending for Health Education England and for Special Health Authorities both fell outright (SOPS Net Outturn, Analysis of net resource outturn by section, p.96).
