London Olympics a Golden Opportunity for Hackney

08 Jul 2005

Diane Abbott said: “I am overjoyed the IOC has chosen London for the 2012 games.  I would like to congratulate all the people that have worked so hard to enable London to host these Games. It will be the first time the Olympic Games have been held in Britain since 1948 and this is a fantastic opportunity for the city and for all of us right here in Hackney.”

Abbott explained: “Bringing the Games to London will bring about much needed improvements for transport and infrastructure in Hackney.  One of the main transport upgrades should be the further development of the North London Line.  I am a regular user of this Line and an improvement will be an extremely useful way of linking East and West London.” She added: “the Olympics will also serve as momentum for the creation of the East London Line extension which would come all the way to Dalston and be hugely beneficial to our local area.”

Abbott continued: “I believe that Hackney, with some of the finest ethnic restaurants in London, could make the catering at the Olympics very special.  Visitors to the Olympics will sample the best ethnic cooking in London - courtesy of local Hackney restaurateurs.  The Olympics have the potential to enshrine Hackney North and Stoke Newington’s reputation as the restaurant capital of North London.”

Abbott concluded: “Hosting the Olympics will inevitably inspire our young people and encourage them to participate in healthy community sports where they will build life-long friendships. The Games will help boost London’s economic development and will revive deprived areas of East of London by creating more long term employment. This could help us combat poverty in Hackney once and for all.”
