Traffic Problems in Stoke Newington

26 Apr 2005

Diane Abbott, who is a non-driver and uses public transport every day, said: “Many commuters, as well as bus drivers, have complained about severe delays on bus routes (including the number 73) going down the Albion Road because parking regulations are not being properly enforced. The problem has been made worse by the introduction of bendy buses and two new bus routes along Albion Road. The 73 bus is a very important route for those of us that live in Stoke Newington because it is the main bus route coming from the west end into the heart of Stoke Newington.”

Diane explained: “I have stood on Albion Road and seen rush hour traffic locked behind buses for 10 minutes because of bad or illegal parking. Additional problems are caused by other obstructions such as skips. It is wrong that commuters and drivers should be held up in rush hour in this way.”

Diane added: “Any time saved by the congestion charge for buses coming from central London is lost as the buses try to manoeuvre in our streets in Stoke Newington. The unwieldy bendy-buses exacerbate the problem. I call on the Mayor, Ken Livingstone, and Hackney Council to act urgently to help Stoke Newington’s commuters.”
