Pensioners' Convention

05 Apr 2005

The meeting was also attended by the respective Prospective Parliamentary Candidates for Hackney South, Labour’s Meg Hillier, the Conservative PPC for Hackney North, Ertan Hurer, and the Green PPC for Hackney North Mischa Borris.

At the meeting Diane Abbott said: “My Government has done an enormous amount for the pensioners of Hackney. Thousands of pensioners have benefited from the Pensioner Tax Credit and thousands more have claimed the Winter Fuel Allowance. The Government has listened to pensioners’ complaints about the council tax burden and has brought in a special £200 rebate for pensioners.

“Furthermore, under Labour money has been invested in services that pensioners rely heavily on like the health service. In Hackney the Homerton Hospital has had millions pumped into it and now offers a first class service in many departments.”

“I do however believe there is more the Government could do”, Ms Abbott went on; “I am opposed to means testing and it is my personal view that the Government should restore the link between pensions and earnings in order to guarantee everyone a decent basic pension as of right. Nonetheless there’s a lot to be proud of in Labour’s record when it comes to the elderly and I would urge Hackney pensioners to vote Labour.”
