Welcoming timetable for plain packaging

04 Apr 2014
Diane Abbott MP welcomed the government announcement of a timetable for the introduction of plain packaging today. In response to Abbott's questions Public Health Minister Jane Ellison said that plain packaging would be law before the 2015 general election.

Abbott said afterwards: "Smoking is a killer. It is the only legal substance that, taken in the recommended amounts, will eventually kill most of its users. So I am very glad indeed that the government is taking the final steps towards the introduction of plain packaging. This is good news for the health of the nation. It will reduce the number of children taking up smoking and will not only produce a long-term improvement to public health, but will alleviate some of the strain currently placed on NHS cancer treatment services."
